High blood pressure is often called a "silent killer" because many people continue with their daily lives without experiencing very obvious symptoms. Even when some people do know they have high blood pressure, they feel normal and put off visiting the doctor for further treatment, while it quietly causes damage to organs such as the brain.

Explaining Singapore's National Healthcare Schemes
Brief Background
The husband had a history of high blood pressure but was reluctant to seek regular medical treatment. Like many individuals, he felt reasonably well and believed that there was still plenty of time to address his health concerns later.
Unfortunately, later never came.
He suffered a ganglia haemorrhage stroke, resulting in significant disability affecting one arm and one leg. The family suddenly found themselves facing challenges they had never anticipated. The situation is made more challenging as the husband did not have any additional insurance in place.
The concerns extended far beyond hospital bills:
• Who would provide long-term care?
• How would the family cope with reduced income?
• What would happen if further medical complications arose?
• Were there existing estate planning arrangements in place?
During our discussion, I helped the family explore possible avenues of support, including CareShield Life benefits and the CPF Dependent's Protection Scheme.
This case highlights an important aspect of estate planning that is often overlooked.
Estate planning is not only about distributing assets after death. It is also about preparing for situations where illness or disability affects a person's ability to work, make decisions, or care for themselves.
Singapore's Healthcare Schemes
Dependants' Protection Scheme (DPS): A term-life insurance scheme that provides basic financial protection (up to $70,000) to insured members and their families in the event of death, terminal illness, or total permanent disability. It is automatically extended to all working Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents.
CareShield Life: Singapore's national long-term care insurance designed to provide basic financial support and lifetime monthly cash payouts should a severe disability happens.
