Estate planning for blended family is not about excluding people. It is about ensuring that one's wishes are clearly documented so that the people you care about understand your intentions and unnecessary disputes can be minimised.

Brief Background
Recently, I assisted a gentleman in preparing his Will.
Like many people, his life journey had taken different paths over the years. He had previously been married and had children from that marriage. After moving on with life, he built a new family with his current wife and daughter.
As we discussed his estate planning wishes, one thing became clear: he wanted his assets to be distributed according to his current intentions and circumstances. In particular, he wished for his present wife to be the beneficiary of his estate, including assets such as his HDB flat and other possessions.
Without a properly drafted Will, family members may have different expectations about how assets should be distributed. This can lead to uncertainty, misunderstandings, and in some cases, disputes among loved ones.
By putting his wishes into writing, he was able to clearly document how he wanted his estate to be managed and distributed. This provides clarity for the family members involved and helps ensure that his intentions are known when the time comes.
During the signing process, his current daughter acted as a witness to the Will. The process was straightforward, but the impact can be significant. A properly executed Will serves as an important record of a person's intentions and can help reduce future disagreements.
Every family situation is unique.
Blended families, second marriages, and children from different relationships often create estate planning considerations that should not be left to assumptions.
If your family circumstances have changed over the years, it may be worthwhile to review whether your existing Will (if any) still reflects your current wishes.
